We were issued long wooden poles with canvas STOP flags on one end to halt traffic. That was the whole idea of getting on the safety patrol! Well, not topping cars … what a cool weapon that flagpole was!
When I was safety patrol somewhere around 40 years ago, we had the exact same orange sashes (we called them patrol belts. No truncheons, either. Or poles. But we could roll them up and hang them from our belts and walk around elementary school with an authoritative swagger.
