@pearlandpeach - Winky keeps getting attacked, he keeps going “AAAH! MY SPLEEN!”, and he keeps referring to a sci-fi “in-joke” that someone here explained once but I forget. I’ve put up a tag which should lead you to other examples of how this strip handles the gag.
I knew Winky was going to get involved in this somehow. The “astonishing” :) thing is that he never seems to learn anything from his experiences with Dr. Mel. If it had been Calvin, Dr. Mel might have experienced some spleen trouble of his own by now.
Should be, this being the 30th anniversary of the McDonalds’ popular fast food feature. My mom says she was 20 when it came out. I was born 2 year later.
Sci-Fi “In-joke”: In the MST3K version of “This Island Earth,” when the Mutat (“much like [our] insects. Bigger, of course, and more intelligent”) wounds Exeter in the upper left abdomen, Crow T. Robot exclaims, “My spleen!!!”
kdobson: Thanks for the help! I’ve never been around a TV long enough at the right time to watch that show all the way through at any time. The glimpses I’ve seen look hilarious. Wonder if there are DVD versions…:)
Winky isn’t stupid, just naive…which in his case must be non-fixable too.
I like the early idea in this strip that Dr. Mel had: cloning Winky so he’d have a constant supply. Sometimes I think he’s still using it on the side.
Either that, or else Winky’s spleen is an organ that should make every Klingon and Borg in the universe jealous with its self-regeneration and backup abilities. :))
It’s amazing how many times Winky has recieved damage to major organs (i.e., his spleen) and still survived. A: He happens to be very resilient (to the point of ridiculousness), B: As Johanan suggested, Dr. (They should take away his degree on grounds of malpractice!) Mel is using clones, or C: This is just a comic strip, and therefore not real, so don’t waste your time trying to rationalize it.

Since Winky is smiling, does that make him a “Happy Meal?”

You’d think Winky would “just say no” to Dr. Mel’s ideas by now…

I know that it’s the tip of the hot dog costume, but it looks like Winky is wearing a yarmulke, and that just doesn’t seem kosher.

After this a Winky spleen may be all that’s left.

NOW you’ve done it, bobdale. As if I don’t have enough goodies to waste my time this particular week. :))
Thanks anyway. :)

I don’t remember ThIs Island Earth as hilarious. MST3k ?
McGehee about 15 years ago
MST3K means “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” A bona fide cultural phenomenon.
magnusvisel about 15 years ago
yes, this island earth is only good when taken with MST3K
