Danae: OK...run it by me again, Jeffrey. Jeffrey: Mars will be closer to Earth in a few weeks than it's been in 5,000 years... Which is a window of opportunity for a voyage between the two planets with an anti-gravity transporter. Danae: Oh, I see what you're saying... The martian invaders will need a lot of those to take all the humans back to Mars as slaves... Jeffrey: That's not what I said!!

Well Jeffery could always outsource the production to Mexico.

I hope he knows about the Tharks.

They never listen - just like noone listens when a rumour like this is debunked .. again, and again, and ..
TheInquisitor over 15 years ago
I heard that even when people learn that a myth is debunked, people are more prone to remember the myth than the debunking.

Sure, and I remember when harass was two words.

Yeah, and I remember when it was pronounced ha rass instead of hair as.

When will you understand Danae that Jeffrey never likes to let a study-op (in this case to study the Red Planet) go by unused?!
Or maybe that concept is too simple?!

Or not unlike Benny Hill, use it to take on stewardasses.

wndrwrthg, the range of your intellect amazes me. I remember fondly my “journeys” to Barsoom. you probably know of this site, but others may find it interesting; http://www.erbzine.com/mag15/1510.html

I find fantasy far more plausible than reality.

just finished a S M Stirling book called “In the Court of the Crimson Kings” which I found very reminiscent of the comic book adaptations I’ve read of ERB’s John Carter stories. (Sadly, I never saw the actual books.) Thought it was a decent read, if anyone cares for a recommendation.

yyyguy The original books are a great read. Start with “A Princess of Mars” (there are 11 Mars books by ERB). You can probably find them at Abebooks.com, a great source for old, used, out-of-print and collectable books.

I actually know some people like Danae who only hear what they want regardless of what you really say. Then insist on telling you their interpretation of what they heard that you actually didn’t say.

Strange how ERB’s “Tarzan” became so popular/famous, but how many people do you know familiar with Jon Carter? (PS to yyyguy - It’s “Jon”, as I recall from my childhood, which was admittedly a few years in the past)
bmonk over 15 years ago
Jon Carter of Barsoom? Never heard of him. (I didn’t have a misspent childhood, because I can’t play pool. I read. Almost anything and everything with type on it.)
And I even played Martian chess a time or two. Not a bad game, for all it’s odd rules.

Grazer, fantasy has to be more plausible than reality. It has to make sense, be coherent and, well, plausible. Reality just has to have happened.

Ughhhhhhhhhh! Bleeeeeeeep! That’s not what I said! Love the way Jeffery screamed madly. LOLs!

given recent reality, who wouldn’t take fantasy? Mercury Theatre on the Air anybody?
bobpeters61 over 15 years ago
Let it go, Jeffery. She’ll make what she wants of it anyhow.

If you don’t mind reading on the computer, ERB’s Barsoom books, the Tarzan stories, and most of his other stuff is available at The Gutenberg Project. Free.

Ushindi,I believe yyyguy was right.Ther was John Carter,Dejah Thoris,Carthoris,Tars Tarkas,etc.

Guys & Girls, You really do take me back to a mis-spent childhood. Hooray for some good old “lets kill some aliens” SF
bmonk over 15 years ago
How could a nerdish childhood spent reading possibly be misspent? Nerds have a higher average income than lots of other High School stereotypes. And definitely better fantasy lives.
yyyguy over 15 years ago
Thanks NebulousRikulau and JanCinVV. I’ll have to check into that when I get a chance.
Ushindi over 15 years ago
elevatorman - you are absolutely correct - JOHN Carter, not Jon. As I said, it’s been a few years, and my apologies to yyyguy. I no longer have any of the Barsoom books, but I HAVE managed to hold onto two Tarzan hardbounds; The Forbidden City and The City of Gold, both from 1952 (also have 3 Penrod books from my dad, around 1920). OK, I’ll shut up now and check my facts next time.
