    On the day this strip originally ran the US shot the first artificial satelite into space. It was a manhole cover, covering a 500ft deep shaft. On August 27, 1957 US techs detonated a nuke on the bottom of this shaft for testing purposes, blowing the manhole cover right into space. After the test the scientists evaluated the recording of the explosion and estimated that the manhole cover had been accelerated to a speed of around 125,000 miles per hour (around 200,000 kph), which is five times the escape velocity. This was also the fastest object ever recorded in earth’s atmosphere.
