What bothers me about Lisa Benson is that, while I always can get what she’s saying, it’s in spite of her cartoons, not because. They’re a mish-mash of conflicting images. She’s got H1N1 here, and she’s got a pig, (because it’s swine flu, get it?), but other than that I don’t see much of a meaningful connection.
If you were a Republican and watch Fox News, you would understand that the pig is Obama and he want stop the swine flu vaccine so that grandma will die, and he can turn the country in a socialist, gay loving society.
Big honking, overblown hysteria over little piggie in the road. Worldwide annual flu deaths total 250,000 to 500,000 with 36,000 of those in the US on average. H1N1 has killed 1100 worldwide through July. Why was this even declared a national emergency?
It must have been to highlight how much we need Gov’t to take care of us during all these crisis’ to make sure we all have the vaccine….oops.
Maybe it was so Politicians could use the hype to show how much we need a public option and nanny gov’t.
The critic is that Obama was too slow to respond, then declared a “national emergency” to spur production and provide for distribution. No matter what he did, or didn’t do, it is his fault to Lisa.
The REAL reason vaccine was slow was that 1. Tamiflu, produced under patent to Rumsfeld’s company, which is totally ineffective against H1N1 was again being marketed like crazy, AND 2. the fact they had to isolate a flu strain suitable for combating what the people were actually getting, then getting it into production on a large enough scale.
Of course the fact that “normal” flu is still killing more folks, across a broader age span, is unimportant to politics of events.
You may not be a serf ANandy, but you got to back up your information yourself. That’s a pretty basic rule. You made the argument, it’s your responsibility to support it, not cdwards.
Calling it an national emergency legally opens options for the hospitals to take in case a really big influx of patients were to occur. It seems like good planning. Naturally any good deed goes punished by right wingers. Obama scratches a kitten’s chin and Fox accuses him of slitting the little thing’s throat.

^ANandy, do you have some source material for that? Is there a link to an article where pharmaceutical reps say this?
