I suspect Gary originally had a few more strips poking fun at those who thought the world was coming to an end ā€“ but he felt sorry for them and decided to give them a pass.

This looks familiar. I demand I show me my birth certificate. Iā€™m that old? Last thing I remember was a young man named Zonker evading the draft, er studying at Walden Puddle. They elected who?

Perhaps he had a lot more strips queued up about Trumpā€™s presidential bid ā€“ and had to toss themā€¦

Itā€™s funny. We know these are repeat trips, but the date signature in the panel is for today. Does GBT think his readers donā€™t know this?

ā€œA comedian is a man with a good memory for jokes standing before an audience that he hopes does not.ā€ - Where does that quotation come from? I canā€™t remember.

Doughfoot, thatā€™s because they pull vacation strips from the same date some number of years earlier.I think heā€™s actually taking a vacation weekā€”the stripā€™s not running in the paper this week.

Doughfoot, I donā€™t know who said it, (probably a comedian..), but I like it! BTW, guys, if you click on the comic it gets larger, and you can see the year (2010) in the space between panel one and twoā€¦

^Doughfoot, it was probably Milton Berle. I once heard him ā€“ in the late 1980ā€™s I think ā€“ cracking hilarious jokes that I hadnā€™t heard before. Then I realized he was probably pulling material from his ā€˜Vaudeville memory banksā€™ . . . 60-year old humor that very few living people can remember.

Either vacation or having to dump the Trump (or rapture) strips. http://www.gocomics.com/doonesbury/2010/01/05/

Heck beady, if GTā€™s stumped with Trump he could use Newt instead.

Um, are yā€™all joshinā€™, and Iā€™m not gettinā€™ it? Trudeau famously took a long hiatus from the strip c. 1977. He was popular enough to get away with it, and came back with updates to his charactersā€™ lives that had ā€œhappenedā€ while he was away. He invented the vacation for daily comic strip artists. Heā€™s got time off in his contract.

Henny Youngman was once asked why Milton Berle was such a great comedian. Youngman said, ā€œBecause he knows a million jokes.ā€ The interviewer then asked Youngman if HE knew a million jokes. His responseā€¦ā€œwho do you think taught Berle?ā€

Funny, Lewreader! I also have followed Doonesbury since it first started, feeling empathy since I also was a political cartoonist in my college newspaper around the same time period. Unlike Yale, though, my religious institution wasnā€™t as tolerant after one strip poked fun at college dress code
