There have been some pretty robust studies indicating that the NYT, along with most mainstream newspapers, tilt right, if only because the publishers tilt that way (even though the reporters generally do not), and therefore control which stories get published, so as not to offend their advertisers. Perhaps they don’t tilt right into the wingnut airspace, but right of center nonetheless. The most damning evidence against the NYT was their relentless support for an invasion of Iraq, and their refusal to admit their blind acceptance of White House propaganda as “news.”

Dred, Motive - Have either of you two READ the New York Times in the last twenty years? I read it daily (I used to live in NYC) If its slant is perceived by you as “to the right”, your sense of direction needs help! They are well known for their LEFT-slant by the rest of the world, and whatever “study” you are citing is clearly even more biased. As for their support of the invasion of Iraq - that lasted about twenty-four hours. The first time anyone mentioned “blood” they turned and demanded Rumsfeld’s head. PLEASE do not consider yourselves even CLOSE to being in the nation’s political center, for, alas, the vast number of your posts reveal that you are well out to the liberal-left end of the spectrum.

I’m on the left, and the idea that the NY Times is leftist is laughable to me. The assertion that their support for Iraq was short-lived is a flat out lie. The petulance of reactionaries who tell us we don’t define the center because they do is infantile. Conservatism is rapidly becoming more irrelevant because of people like the posters on this forum.

You guys throw around “rest of the world” like it means something. Compared with the rest of the industrialized nations, the NYT indeed slants right. Maybe, maybe compared with some US papers, it slants left. But to do so you have to define Barry Goldwater as “center”! http://www.amazon.com/What-Liberal-Media-Truth-About/dp/B0002X1JN2/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239396368&sr=8-1

WillieB, the notion that the NYT cheerleading for invading Iraq only lasted 24 hours is nonsense. It lasted several months. Judith Miller’s front page “scoops” paralleled the Bush administration’s strategy for many months. I’ve previously posted about their circular sourcing scam — they leak to Miller/NYT, it gets published as anonymous sources, the Bushies cite the NYT as their source. Not a single piece of evidence involved, just each other. The NYT’s bamboozlement during those months was embarrassing. Miller’s not there anymore, thank goodness. Lousy journalism.

The New York Times also endorsed Clinton over Obama in the primaries. But the conservatives say that Obama was the most liberal senator. Why wouldn’t the liberal NYT support Obama over someone who voted to support Bush on Iraq?

I read the NY Times and I think it’s center-right, and very corporatist. But if you DON’T think it’s right-leaning how do you explain why they supported the invasion of Iraq and soft-pedaled opposition to the war?

I’d like to second this. People who think the US media are left-leaning have probably never lived in or spent much time outside the US. American conservatives seem to rival North Koreans for their provincalism. By the standards of ALL the other major western democracies US political culture is way to the right. The UK Conservative party is to the LEFT of the US Democrats.
