The actual idea is hospitality. Christians are to “give to them that ask”, be kind to strangers “for in so doing some have entertained angels unawares.” Hospitality is not unique to Christianity. The idea is not to “give to God” (ridiculous), but to allow God to use you as a conduit to bless others. Unfortunately, hospitality in America has been institutionalized and corrupted. (And charity co-opted by government professionals.)

All a church can do is ask for money. The government does it at the point of a gun. (Try saying “no” to the tax man some time!)
