Wish I were there, in that cartoon. Looks like a lot of fun.

Ok, we need to make Gasoline Alley fully interactive. Anyone know any appropriate music to listen to for something like this? I’m for ‘Sultans of Swing’ by Dire Straits but I know they’re the wrong flavor of music. Any better ideas? It sure does look like they’re havig a great time.

people take these comics a little too seriously; o.k.,most people are not musicians,so wouldn’t know or care how the harmonica is being blown!!or if the guitar is electric!the cartoonist conveys the sense of a performance, brilliantly!! to a performer, that interaction with the audience is the reason to live.

I am also a long-time musician; I find the trio to be of unusual composition, and the bassman’s hands are also not true to life. But I also know that a band is made up of the musicians you have and that panel two is really and truly where the action is at. That applause is addicting the first time you hear it, and you can never get enough. I was also thinking a .wav file would go well with this strip. We’ve been so many weeks getting to this point; I hope Gertie appreciates the artist, even though the man is a boor.

I just figured Earl was drawn that way because a harp player usually has the instrument covered. If it were true to life, it would look like Earl just had his hands over his mouth. I like the way the scroll of the bass extends out of the first panel.

Jim is an accomplished musician. He plays a mean fiddle which sounds like a cross between blue grass and country western. He is also an avid jazz enthusiast.

    NotNormanChubsyUbsy says:

I may not be a professional blues musician but I’ve been to enough blues bars to know that’s not how a professional “harp” player plays into the microphone. One would also expect the guitar player to be playing an electric guitar. I’ve had just about enough of Earl Lee Byrd, his harmonica, his bigotry and this story arc, thank you.

Obviously you’ve never been in a real honky tonk or juke joint. There are still unplugged musicians out there playing in bars and on Prairie Home Companion, and on Whatd’ya’know. I think Scancarelli wanted to show Earl playing his harp. I also think Earl is a disciple of Chef on South Park. You know were he stands.
