Like Setebos said, originally it had a Chicago area locale (King often referenced local highways and landmarks), then it was supposedly centered in an area like Tomah, Wisconsin. Moore and then Jim gradually gave it a Southern touch (which I personally don’t agree with).
One rejection and he leaves? If he really wanted to marry Gertie because he fell in love with her he should have stayed to try and win her over. He’s a loser! I am totally ready to move on to a different story.
It does have a Southern feel to me, too, but then I’ve only been to the Maryland/D.C./Virginia area a few times, and Disneyworld once (and Disney is beyond mere geography).
I agree with the gang, “Caulky” should fill in the gaps better than he did.
I like how our boy, ahem, Caulky, refers to Gasoline Alley like it’s the name of the town. I thought it was a part of town, like Tin Pan Alley or (I know it’s going to bleep it) Hell’s Kitchen.
Hey, no bleep, what do you know? Hell hell hell. We’re big kids.
Clinton? Probably after the Revolutionary War general. You know, I would have guessed you were a New York City guy, NotNorman. You’ve got that crusty old crumudgeon thing down pat. And yet you probably leave food out for the neighborhood stray cats. You old softie.
Back to my original post though, is Gasoline Alley the name of the town? I thought it originally had something to do with the gas station Slim runs, ages ago.

Is the locale of the strip established? I can’t remember.

Frank King, the creator of the strip, supposedly based the characters on people he knew from his days in Chicago’s South Side.

“Not really” is a vague answer from Corky. Push him a little, Gertie.
