Growing up in a small town, the high school sports teams offered the only thing to do on a Friday, so even though we had the worst teams in Central Ohio (okay, the basketball team did well), we were all out in force. I don’t think we ever attached as much import to the game itself as we did the camaraderie.
Because a lot of people, both male and female, enjoy sports of all kinds, Doc Toon, and football is one of the most popular, at least on the male people side. Some, like you, don’t like sports - I don’t care for basketball, myself, but there are an awful lot of fans who do. To each his own…
Because…football is the quintessential American sport. It’s violent, territorial, a team sport with opportunities for individual stardom…& get this…unlike baseball & basketball…it was invented in the SOUTH. :)
This week is our first-ever ‘BIG TURKEY OF A FUND DRIVE”! If you like my comics and particular brand of comedy, you can show your support through a small donation. No pressure… Just thought I’d through it out there.
I have it under good authority that God will love you just a little more for your generosity, tho… So, you’d have that going for you.
Thanks for reading, either way!

Even more important than football in small towns: basketball. It’s easier to get a team of 5 (plus subs) than two or more squads of 11 (or 9) plus subs…
Maybe small and big towns are full of football, but if you move to America’s biggest town you’ll have to suffer withdrawal. After over 25 years here, with athletes for kids, I can’t name a single spot inside the City line (that’s five counties with 8.5 million people) with a football field since the Jets moved out of Shea, except for the Columbia U. stadium at 219th Street in Manhattan right next to the Crew boathouse. I guess they figure the cricket, frisbee/rugby, baseball and soccer fields would get too chewed up or something.
I never even learned that in the rest of the country, these days, high schools play football on Friday nights - until “Friday Night Lights” became a movie. When I grew up in a rural part of NJ, schools held pep rallies at the football field on Fridays, but games every Saturday afternoon. Sounds a lot less expensive - and less cold! - to me, but, whatever. Perhaps if they can afford to light the field and bleachers they heat ‘em too?

Sports in small towns may be important, but nothing is more important that education.
