Hrm. I just went through the whole 2003 baseball season strips, and no mention of Marty’s arm hurting. As it happened, Milford not only had a three-pitcher rotation but a genuine bullpen for a change.
He did come up with lines like “Guys, I have to finish my career with a state title” though … or the “Do I really need college?” after a 16K outing in which he threw at 96 mph.
With a subplot or two (Oh, look, two weeks worth of Kyle coming back for pregnant Melissa), the plot of baseball season was Brent Raptor’s weight problem.
The strips in question are from the week of June 4th, 2001. Looks like the writer back then left it up to the reader to decide if the cortisone shot was DeJong’s, or Thorp’s idea.

No doubt about Marty being a whiner.
Gil never modelled himself on Coach John (of Big Nate infamy).

Is it true that Marty went on to become a porn star?
