    This looks like the set-up for George Pal’s 1951 movie When Worlds Collide based on the novel by Philip Wylie and Edwin Balmer (1933). (There is a remake from DreamWorks scheduled for 2012.)

    I seems like it would take longer to form a planet without the force of an orderly system. Most such would probably be relatively new, though some rogues may be left over from blown stars, or have been knocked loose by stray debris.
