Frazz by Jef Mallett for June 24, 2011
Transcript:
Frazz: What kind of songs do you want to learn to write? Coach Hacker: Well, I can't play an instrument. I can't read music. I don't have a good voice. So nothing where I'd need those. Frazz: Hacker, you don't adjust art down to your limitations. You rise to what you need to do. Coach Hacker: I need to do something easy.

Auto-Tune. Aim for R&B and use Auto-Tune. It works for a LOT of those acts!

I’d say it’s kazoo time!

So what if he can’t play or sing? He’s just writing. As for not reading music, that can be remedied.

Sing “Friday.” Endlessly.

Screaming your lyrics can be appropriate, at times, particularly if you can carry a tune while doing so (think “Immigrant Song” or “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, for example). And Rock & Roll isn’t the ONLY genre where a grating voice need not be an impediment to success. I know a lot of people who consider Lucinda Williams a wonderful singer, but to me her voice is nails on a chalkboard.

He should do the fat-man blues.

No disagreement on general principle, bigpuma, but personally I can’t abide Lucinda Williams.

^^ (My one exception for Lucinda Williams is “Can’t Let Go.” I bought the album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road on the strength of my liking of that song, but found the rest of it unlistenable. Again, I know that’s my personal opinion and nothing more.)

No instrument, no tone, no voice. You just described half of pop music.

Hacker’s doing country, right? He should just write a song about having no musical talent.
