Red and Rover by Brian Basset for June 16, 2011
Transcript:
Carol: Red, do you want me to sign you up for summer camp? Red: Mom, no! The last time I went away to camp I ended up in the infirmary every day. My stomach hurts just thinking about it. Carol: Oh that's right, you were homesick for Rover. Red: I missed you and dad, too. Just not as much.

I never wanted to go to summer camp becauseit would have meant leaving my dogs and that was something I just didn’t want to do.
I would take summer days running free in the woods around our house or hiking through the cornfields with my dogs to keep me company any day over going to camp with a lot of kids I didn’t even know.

I don’t think Charlie Brown ever had the choice. Red’s lucky.

I loved camp too… I had my first kiss there :) but also made many friends. Learned all sorts of inappropriate songs, watched several sunrises, and learned to appreciate the outdoors. Good times!

Only camp available to me when I was a kid (1940s) was Bible Camp. Not that much fun!!

I’m with Red on this – at age 31, I feel badly about leaving my cats for a week-long “word camp” (writers’ workshop.) Feeling bad about leaving husband is secondary. ;)

I wrote a song for my Mom’s birthday using that song. She loved it. May she rest in peace.
