The wonder is that so often, in fact it seems mostly, the teachers are blind to what is going on. Or….they just don’t want to see and be bothered with it.

A few kids are the dominators and everyone else better fall into line…or else. And somehow that is OK with the teachers. And yet, I have great sympathy for the teachers because they have an enormous responsibility and not much thanks.

    It is a conundrum.

Yes, it is a conundrum. Best that can happen is somehow the kid figures out a way for “payback”.

Gym class was the time to show the near-bullies that the not-so-wimpy-me could haul butt and sink basket after basket, almost on command. I was a country farm boy who LOVED the Celtics.

Gym class is good preparation for life. One needs to learn to deal with adversity. But, now everyone is a winner, gets a trophy and all learn that doing less than your best or nothing at all is rewarded equally with those you try to succeed. .

It is the start of a hard lesson in life – If you choose to follow instead of lead then you have to live with the consequences. I am thankful that I learned to deal with the bullies when I was young and while I did not like them, I did learn from them.It also help me learn to deal with some upper management types, there is not much difference sometimes.

The killing of 12 students at Colorado’s Columbine High School in 1999 caused many schools to finally begin taking the problem of bullying seriously. The US Secret Service studied 37 school shootings and found that in most cases the shooters had been victims of severe bullying.

It is a good thing that Calvin has Hobbes, to talk him out of taking such a severe action.

And yet, Calvin bullies Susie. It’s how kids of all species establish the pecking order. The smart ones, however, learn to either stand up to the bullies or organize opposition to them and they rule.

One of many reasons I hated the public school system;brutal teachers & bullies. The guidance office was a longRunning joke.

It’s kind of useless to fight back when the bully is twice your size. And since when does first grade have “periods?”

The problem is many gym teachers were the big bullies themselves when they were kids, so the big kids picking on the little kids must seem natural to them. After all, they were never hurt in those games, so they must be OK.(How else do you explain the legality of dodgeball?)

Just who was the sick, twisted pervert who invented Dodge Ball (aka Murder Ball) anyway?!?! Obviously a bully himself! I can’t imagine it being played in gym class, but I guess Calvin ‘played’ it. I wonder if it’s been banned yet — considering Tag has been banned in public school playgrounds, because of the ‘danger’ of kids actually touching each other…

For the teachers who turn a blind eye and allow, or actually through example encourage, bullying, it’s a matter of the old heat and kitchen scenario.. Either do your job as a TEACHER, or get out. Yeah, I know, having summers off is a great perk, but real teachers are there for the love of teaching, not simply the benies.

in first and second grade, me and my gym hating friends used to call the gym “the torture tower”. every time gym class came along, or another class we didn’t like, we would fake and injury or illness. or find an excuse to sit out.
