Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for February 04, 1988
Transcript:
Calvin: Boy, you should've seen the sparks fly when I have my half of the report. I've never seen Susie so mad. She accused me of not doing any research and claimed I made up the whole thing. Hobbes: Did you? Calvin: Heck, no. I just took a few creative liberties. Hobbes: And they callled your mom over a few creative liberties? Calvin: Geez, you think Susie was mad...

Looks more like he was not enrolled in Creative Liberties 101, so they gave him a flunking grade in Research Methodologies 101.

“Seen the sparks fly”? I take it from this that Calvin likes Roald Dahl’s 1983 book The Witches (as do I), since he’s likening Susie to the Grand High Witch. In said book, in which Dahl gives his interpretation of “real” witches, the witches of England masquerade as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in order to have a meeting to devise a plot to rid England of children by turning them into mice. When one of the other witches argues with the Grand High Witch, who is Norwegian, the Grand High Witch kills her by sending sparks flying from her eyes.
