    That image of the guy in the pipe REALLY understates the drama. It was a 27 inch sewerage pipe. That’s not much wider than a mans shoulders! What a horrible experience.

    Engineers and architects need to know the sound-transmitting capacities in a variety of media, incliduding air, water and various solids. There are many implications for the construction of buildings, bridges and other structures. Among other things, these equations help predict the bahavior of stuctures in winds, earthquakes and ocean activity. If you think this is useless, you’ve never heard of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. It is a useful exercise to be able to compute the speed of sound in various media, temperatures and pressures; it’s something engineers and physicists learn before they get a bachelor’s degree.

    A rocket traveling at mach at sea level will be going faster than on traveling at mach at an altitude of 20,000 feet.
