Oh wow, Betty and Gloria still can’t pick up any dictionary and read that “man” and Men" refer to the species, not the gender. When you think about it, that’s pretty sexist. That would mean by the earliest writing that males were thrown out of paradise and females should never earn their keep by the sweat of their brows. Maybe Gloria and Betty had that idea.
Actually, ghostkeeper….we cannot say what would have happened if Queens Vicky and Elizabeth I had held the throne jointly in 1776. It’s all a matter of conjecture.
Slightly warped history here. The decisions about the 49th parallel and support of the Monroe doctrine came before Victoria came to the throne. Also, Alaska was sold to the US by Russia — who was a long-standing enemy of England at that time. It was sold to the US precisely because the Russians felt that they couldn’t protect the land from the encroachments of England (via Canada).
Alternate realities seem to play thru a lot of political minds these days, though, aa. Some see us in the 1950’s and their enemies see us in the 1960’s. while the kids just want real jobs and a future. Not seeing that may bring about the bloodiest revolution of all.
“Man” and “Men” can be both a reference to the male sex of the species and a reference to the species as a whole. At the time the English language came about, men essentially ran everything, and the dual use of the word didn’t seem so sexist. In any event, to Jefferson, “man” essentially meant “people” in the context in which he was writing.
Actually, Vickie: that was your GRANDFATHER who screwed the whole thing up with the US, so don’t be so damn proud. In fact, between you, Gramps, your autocratic husband, and your fat-assed reprobate of an uncle, the monarchy was on its last legs in your day, until Tennyson made it respectable again. With all THAT baggage, if you’d been on the throne and lost America, it would have ended the monarchy!
