I still don’t understand why, after the TV got stolen, Calvin’s parents didn’t replace it with an assortment of books that they could enjoy together with him. Suitable choices would have included:

    1. A Gallery of Dinosaurs & Other Early Reptiles (©1989) by David Peters

    2. The Macmillan Illustrated Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs & Prehistoric Creatures: A Visual Who’s Who of Prehistoric Life (©1988) by Dougal Dixon et al.

    3. The Way Things Work (©1988) by David Macaulay

    4. The Big Book of Amazing Animal Behavior (©1987) by Annette Tison and Talus Taylor

    5. Everyday Things (©1987) by Eliot Humberstone

    6. Nature Hide & Seek: Jungles (©1987) by John Norris Wood

    7. The Big Book of Animal Records (©1985) by Annette Tison and Talus Taylor

    8. Life in the Pond (©1985) by Eileen Curran

    9. Joe Kaufman’s Slimy, Creepy, Crawly Creatures (©1985)

    10. The Encyclopedia of Mammals (©1984) by Dr. David Macdonald (editor)

    11. A Visit to the Sesame Street Firehouse (©1983) by Dan Elliott

    12. First Questions About Animals (©1983) by Keith Faulkner

    13. The Witches (©1983) by Roald Dahl

    14. Simon & Schuster’s Guide to Mammals (©1982) by Luigi Boitani and Stefania Bartoli

    15. The Doomsday Book of Animals: a Natural History of Vanished Species (©1981) by David Day

    16. Do You Know? (©1979) by B. G. Ford

    17. Barbapapa’s Ark (©1974) by Annette Tison and Talus Taylor

    18. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator (©1972) by Roald Dahl

    19. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (©1964) by Roald Dahl

    20. ABC of Cars and Trucks (©1956) by Anne Alexander

    21. Just So Stories (©1912) by Rudyard Kipling
