OK, ālegaleagle48ā, Iām going to assume you read a sports-based comic strip and actually are clueless enough to not get the joke:
The guy is a place kicker for a football team (pro or college) who is about to execute a (shall we say) āgame winningā kiss with his girlfriend, when suddenly an opposing coach (perhaps a metaphor for the girlfriendās parents?) calls time out to stop and āiceā the play (i.e.: attempt to throw off his timing.) The coach and referee are hallucinations on the guyās part and the girl, who sees nothing, does not know whatās going on.
I suppose it is the stripās attempt to ridicule the tendency of coaches to call last-second time outs to try to ārattleā an opposing kicker. Coaches do this despite place kickers maintaining that it usually donāt do any good and instead gives the kicker and the opposing team more time to set up a field goal.
I came to the comments page because I was hoping someone already HAD explained it. It really is a nightmare? Heās a hockey player who became a placekicker? Whatever. Her skounched up face waiting for the kiss that never came is kinda horrifying.
I just noticed the 35 year anniversary notice! Wow! Understand todayās comic or not, I love Tank. Thanks! Norts Spews Forever!
This is like the Saints & Redskins last week. Saints scored a TD on a play that took five minutes to review. The play stood as called and as the Saints were lining up for the PAT, the āSkins called a timeout.

Al, I read Tank despite the fact that I never watch, play or know much about sports. Most of the time I donāt need a play-by-play to get the joke. I simply enjoy reading the strip.
Dypak, in this case, āIcingā is not a hockey penalty, but the process of calling a timeout in football just before a field goal attempt to try to un-nerve the kicker. Heās not a hockey player, but it took me two reads to get it given that the first words were āicingā and it immediately made me think of hockey as well.
I didnāt really get it until I saw the āplacekickerās nightmareā placard in the lower right corner. Might have worked better in the upper left.

This strip is becoming way too esoteric for me. Would someone care to explain the joke, because I DONāT GET IT!

You have to really understand pro-football to appreciate this. Way too esoteric!!
