What kind of pie are we talking about here? Oh how I would love to have a big slice of my mom’s blackberry pie made from wild blackberries and with a big dipper of homemade vanilla ice cream. Ahhh, those were the days!
puppybreath said,“Ahhh, those were the days!”my friend, we thought they’d never endwe’d sing and danceforever and a day! We’d live the life we chooseWe’d fight and never loseFor we were youngand sure to have our wayLa la la la la La la la la la laThose were the days Oh yes those were the days!
Wanting a “bigger piece of the pie” is what our representative government has boiled down to, and that’s the whole problem. When we became a statist government that concerns itself with how much pie everyone gets, we lost our way, and the results of it is what you see today. We’re destroying ourselves, and neither party is doing anything to stop it.
A typical voter from ANY party and almost any country — he’ll vote for whoever will promise to do the most for HIM personally, even if it’s bad for the country. Hence the debt crisis that’s crippling many countries around the world. Very few voters care about their country, or even their children who inherit the national debt they leave behind. Democracy works only if voters can overcome their inherent selfish, greedy human nature. Which is why a benevolent dictatorship would be better, if you could find one!
There are a lot of kids in the same situation as you, Calvin, so I suggest you join a union. Chances are, one has already been organized for your constituency, and dues will only take ten percent of your allowance.
Why not let Calvin and other 6-year olds vote? It seems that the vast majority of American voters are already functioning at a lower developmental level when they cast their votes
Republicans are the bane of America’s existence. They only do what benefits themselves while screwing with American’s lives. After 8 years of their beloved Fuhrer Bush!t’s destruction & lies, no Republican should ever hold office again. That is proof that when one takes control, everyone suffers. SAVE AMERICA, Abolish the GOP!!!
If you don’t think Watterson did a good enough job with Calvin and Hobbes, why do you bother reading it? Rather than lamenting the loss of Calvin and Hobbes, maybe new cartoonists could come up with fresh, original ideas… you know… like Watterson did
Don’t know why these strips always have to turn political – but has anyone noted we have two major political parties, both of which would rather lead a 2d or 3d world country than see their opponent lead a first world country?
Today’s strip begs the question………… Wait…………Cancel that first line, for the sake of the English purists out there….. Today’s strip raises the question as to how many U.S. politicians are truly focused on what is best for the country, and how many are still effectively six years old, focused on what is best for themselves. (And, regardless of which side they are on, they are tempted to believe that the other side is behaving like a bunch of six-year-olds.) I suspect that many of our leaders are not even fully aware of their own motives, which sometimes can be very mixed. Full awareness of personal motives is something that is very difficult for all of us, but it becomes even more difficult when there is a lot of power involved, especially on the east coast in our nation’s capital.
Speaking of power and the east coast, watching the incredible magnitude of Hurricane Irene on the weather maps, covering many states at once, certainly gives one a feeling of powerlessness. I’m wondering how many of you have been affected by the hurricane. Please let us know how you are doing. Of course, if you were badly affected, you may be lacking the time to be reading this, not to mention the electricity – speaking of power and the east coast.
@exturk: You have succinctly stated the problem. I’ve noticed few of the C&H cartoons that can be construed political…and I guess this one can be interpreted that way as much as it illuminates the human tendency to always want more without considering the cost.
Puppybreath – your description of the pie and ice cream brought back fond memories for me as well, although in my case it was homemade blueberry pie with chocolate ice cream…for Calvin perhaps a case of sugar bombs would satisfy….
Gee, a guy marries and has a family before he is 40 so he is unable to put in well over 100 hours a week acquiring wealth. So tell me mister complainer, you chose comfort over financial success in your 20s. Why are you complaining today? Oh, I got a great tip, willing to bet the roof over your families head on a dream? If not, I doubt your income will ever be in the 7 figures.Education, hard work, and guts. You need all three. Nice family though.
This is hilarious. As though we don’t get enough negative garbage every day from both political parties, now we get to regurgitate and attempt to digest it in our comics. Chill people.

Calvin is a true Republican. That’s why they leave all those loopholes.

And THAT, my friends, is why 6-year olds aren’t allowed to vote. No sense of perspective.

Whether he’s a republican or a democrat depends on whether he is willing to work for that piece of pie or not.

Some might call Calvin A REPUB or Tea Pooher, but he didn’t say he wanted ALL the pie, so he isn’t quite there yet.

I would have said the opposite. It’s not the Republicans that want more government or to share the wealth.
