If Gene’s expression is to be believed, it looks like another surprise visit from the folks

“These people are starving to death?” Odd statement, what does he mean, that it’s easy because people are so desperate to eat there?

Panel three is a little hard to follow. “Absolutely” is directed at Janis. Then with no break Gus is hollering at Gene to provide Arlo and Janis some service. I think.

Gus is ensuring his customers get prompt service, that’s why he is admonishing Gene. I believe Gus when he praises Gene, even with the yelling in P3.

Wish I’d gotten that kind of service where I went Saturday night.

My thoughts on panel 3: Yes, Gene is doing great… “starving to death” is just a down-home expression, offering hospitality… “family” – a bit of smugness there…

^ Exactly -" Don’t mind me barking at your kid, he’s mine now." ~ I don’t believe Gus is bad intentioned, he means it as acceptance. But I’ve been in Janis’ position before, and it rankles all the more when it’s a daughter. With a son, it’s a bit fun to see him toeing the line, but it still chafes a bit. In-lawing is complicated!

When I was a waiter at that age, I was the same way. As well as during my teaching career. It’s a good way to be. But a switch shuts off when you retire. Your focus turns to doing what pleases you and your loved ones. Other things that were important before sometimes just fade away.

Gus doesn’t seem like the type to give out compliments lightly so when he says Gene could run the place tomorrow, I see it as a sign of trust!

Hint: Head of restrarant turned towards the kitchen and absent waiter that the customers are starving. Hard puzzle. really.
