Is it true that Rob Portman, Boehner’s appointment to the supercommitte on the budget, recommends doing away with Social Security, Medicare and veteran’s benefits as a means of balancing the budget?
The national debt was raised under Reagan 189%, by Bush I 55%, by Clinton 37%, by Bush II 89%, and by Obama so far 35%. Cons rail against the stimulus package, though half of it was tax cuts, which they say they like. They don’t like income taxes, which after all, they say, were instituted in WWI and point out that they were only supposed to affect the wealthy. Yet they complain that too many poor people don’t have to pay them! The goal of every GOP politician is to shift tax burdens from the wealthy to the rest, and of Democrats to shift tax burdens from the rest to the wealthy. The Democrats have been failing at this for 30 years and the GOP has been succeeding for 30 years. Yet they are the ones who sound angry, and claim they are put upon! Still, the GOP are not hypocrites. They really do believe that the best things for the country is weaken the ability of the nation to serve its citizens, that “every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost” leads to a better world than any action based on the principle of “we’re all in this together.” They think losers deserve to lose, and winners deserve to be rewarded. They think unemployed people SHOULD suffer, so they won’t get uppity, and the wealthy should be praised and even rewarded for be savvy enough to get rich.
A conservative and a liberal sit down to dinner together. The waiter comes and lays a plate on the table with one big fat steak on it. The liberal says, “No matter what it looks like, I am sure there is a steak for each of us.” The conservative grabs the plate and says “Hah! I was quicker than you! I’ve got mine, so I’ve earned it. Screw you!” Neither one suggests diving the one steak between them.
