Know what I do with comics I found getting stale (Calvin and Cathy for example.)? I STOPPED READING THEM! Holy crap! What a marvel and amazing idea!
I always tell my kids that they can choose what they want as long as they realize they may have to explain at every house what they are. My youngest will have to do that this year — she wants to be Frankie Stein from the Monster High dolls. To any adult, she just looks like a girl in a dress with strange tights.

I still am very disappointed that Ms. Johnston opted to end her strip the way she did. There were sooo many story lines that could have been explored. Liz and Anthony (who was NOT pasty, but a loving father, and Liz was a great step-mom), and Michael and Deana with their two little ones. What fun it could have been to see John and Ellie as grandparents, etc. Ms. johnston, you disappointed a LOT of people when you decided to give up. I know your life wasn’t the best at the time you quit, but I do believe that a continuation of the strip could have been a good catharsis.
Elly could make Michael’s E.T. costume from papier-mache. I made my son a papier-mache astronaut helmet for his Halloween almost 20 years ago. I love and adore these old FBOFW strips. They bring back fond memories of me as a young mother of three kids.
Wouldn’t there have have been E.T. costumes in the stores at that time? That movie was so huge back then . . . who wouldn’t have known who E.T. was if they saw him (on a child as a Halloween costume)?!
You’d think from reading some of the comments on various strips that just because the cartoonist shares some of his thoughts in a public forum like a newspaper cartoon that he/she has some sort of debt to the readers who enjoy the strip. Be thankful for the memories. I miss Walt Kelly’s offerings, but I don’t throw stones at him for inconveniencing my comics experience by dying, and if Mr. Watterson and Ms. Johnston. among others. chose to no longer pursue their art, that’s their business and their choice. Be thankful for the gems they left behind.
I used to make the body of my kids’ costumes from cotton flannel while they were young so they became the PJs for a while. As they grew from 3 to 4, they did many group themes.
I agree with blushkies that these talented people do not owe the readers any kind of explanation about why they wrote this or that. I enjoy all the toons that I read as works of art that stand alone in time and it does not matter if they are current or written many years ago (though it is good to know).
