My then-12-year-old son asked me that very question. I replied, “Because I don’t want you to turn out like (insert spoiled kid’s name here).” I knew my sons didn’t like that spoiled brat, so it was very effective. That son is now 19, and hasn’t given us any real trouble since then. He may not like what he is told to do (usually chores), but he will do them. (Respectful disagreements and discussions are allowed in our home.)
