Baldo by Hector D. Cantú and Carlos Castellanos for October 21, 2011
Transcript:
Gracie: Papi, more hispanic kids than ever before now live in poverty. Baldo: So what are we going to do about it? Gracie: Well, If each meal costs us $5, we can give up one a month... Gracie: And raise more than $200 a year for the food pantry! Baldo: I have a big problem with that. Baldo: I think my one meal is probably closer to $10. Gracie: Great!

Baldo, I don’t remember much high school Spanish from way too many years ago, but I do remember “el puerco!”

@john abrams: Not always, often the pantries are run by churches, and volunteer help. The main problem with “food pantry” food is that is relies hevily on high fat, high sugar, high starch, prosessed foods that can damage your health.

I actually volunteer at a food bank. We don’t have any funding at the moment, so can’t help anyone with their utility bills or rent. We accept donations of food (and money when offered), and our director goes out and buys the food we do not receive as donations. Our “free loaders” are not black, but Hispanic – most of whom do not have green cards and don’t speak English. We have a “sharing tree” program that provides gifts for kids for Christmas, and quite a few of the people I have seen do not sign up for the food bank or other services we offer, but want presents for their kids. I understand that they will often go to several different “servicers” so that they will recieve multiple gifts for their kids. I think this is OUTRAGEOUS!!

Have a little charity. For all their faults, the food pantries are a major reason that no one in this country HAS to die of starvation.
