Ripley's Believe It or Not by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! for November 09, 2011
Transcript:
Before the discovery of vaccination, the Saint Hubert's Key, a shaped piece of metal, was heated and pressed into a bite caused by an animal presumed to be rabid! Martin Delaney (1812-1885), the highest ranking African-American soldier during the US Civil War, was also a doctor, and author, and Explorer, a political activist and a judge! Chook a superb lyrebird at the Adelaide (Australia) zoo learn to perfectly mimic the sounds of construction, including drills, hand saws, trucks and radio conversations, while workers were near his enclosure!

I wonder if Martin is related to Chip?

I think a lyrebird should mimic a lyre, but I won’t keep ‘harping’ on it!
Puddleglum2 about 13 years ago
A ‘liarbird’ would just claim to mimic those sounds!

Martin Delany deserves ‘Major’ commendation!

It would be nice if Ripley’s would have told us what his rank was.

Good point. When I went to an Army school (1960s) the man that graduated at the bottom of the class made E-4 fourteen months before the man that topped it. (both enlisted same day)

People, you’re missing the point completely. “Highest ranking” is not the point…the major accomplishments attributed to this man is the point. The fact that he was a doctor, author, etc… besides, Ripley’s gave all ya’ll know -it-alls something to actually look up on Google lol

The Lyrebird is fun to listen to. There are a number of links to videos on YouTube – here’s one if you are interested:

That’s what I was asking – although Chip’s name has an ‘e’ before the ‘y’ and the Major doesn’t.

Did the lyre bird mimic the construction workers cussing and dirty jokes, too?

Martin sure is inspiring.
Saint Hubert’s Key sounds painful.
I wouldn’t want the Lyre bird living near me!
Shikamoo Premium Member about 13 years ago
Not likely. It would be well known if he were.

It’s nice they had a way to distract you from the onset of rabies. Nothing like being branded to take your mind off things.
