Yet another strip I had to google to understand.

It wasn’t France’s land to sell anyway. It belonged to the Indians. America must demand its money back.

It has to be more than $190M. $15M in 1913 is worth $343M in today’s dollars (see http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl). Add in an extra 90 years of inflation and it is probably at least half a billion.

I understood this one without Google. The Louisiana Purchase was a bargain, as was “Seward’s folly”.

Unfortunately, we not only got New Orleans in the deal, we also got the rest of Louisiana, plus a whole slew of states I wish we could just give back—to the French, to the Indians, to the dinosaurs if need be.

Hey, Seward’s Folly (Alaska) was only 7 million. Have you priced an F16 lately? BTW, it turns out that Russia wanted to unload Siberia, also. We should have taken them up on that! If only for the natural resources….Gadsden Purchase: 10 million Kinda seems expensive by comparison…

I have to google or rely on commenters about a lot of the mid-west references in the strip, but i’ve actually seen Buckwheat Zydeco live! Nice to get it on the first try today.
