I work with schools on a regular basis and have never heard of a school suspending a kid for single use of a banned word. Especially if it is not previously published that this is a banned word. This particular school seems to have a very strange brand of discipline. Or does Deering just have a strange idea of what school is like?
@Beth Ann EarleEarly comic creators also commented on the news and gossip of the day, usually in over-the-top fashion. You might not agree with 1930’s Popeye’s slant on inter-world-war European politics, but you could sure laugh at it.Fun fact: The term ‘Yellow Journalism” seems to have its roots in the very first newspaper Sunday comic strip in America, the Yellow Kid.
Due to a few widely published court cases, school boards are running scared. As usual, they are attempting to treat the symptoms and not the disease (Bullying).
To actually control bullying, the schools will need to be proactive. rather than reactive.
Programs to ensure that the students know bullying is not acceptable, better monitoring of the students actions on the school grounds as well as in the classrooms, and draconian responses to bullying would help.
Ridiculous over-reaction does happen, and not just in comics. Yesterday a Toronto public school banned students from bringing ANY ball (other than a Nerf ball) to school to play with at recess, because a parent was injured by an errant soccer ball. Might as well just chain kids to their desks to keep them (and everyone else) “safe” from any and all potential dangers…
