"I'm seeing fewer reports of bad bahavior on the buses!" "That's because nobody rides the bus anymore." "Hardly anybody walks, either. That makes me sad. The kids are missing classic opportunities for exercise and social growth." "At least we're seeing better behavior." "Not so sure." "Mister Fancy-Pants-Cell-Phone-Doesn't-Use-His-Turn-Signal started it!"

And every one of those Sokkermommwagen pilots voted against the school levy that would have paid for buses.

The streets of the block in front of the schools and all adjacent streets should be closed to motorized traffic within the hour of school start and the one of school finish. so the kids walk at least two blocks down and two blocks up every day. And are at less risk from traffic then.

I have seen parents drive their children a couple hundred yards down the street to the bus stop. I used to walk to my elementary school, going up a hill that passed by a wooded lot. Years later, children were not allowed to walk up that hill because someone might be hiding in the woods (although it was quite open). Of course, no one stopped them from going up the hill to the playground after school hours.
