You don’t tug on Superman’s cape. Tou don’t p- I mean, spit- into the wind. And you don’t approach an obviously angry female who looks like she’s nursing a hangover as big as or bigger than yours with some simplistic explanation.

Get over it, Elly. He told you he didn’t want that many people around!! This is how he handled it.

John, just give the other chick a call. Maybe go out on a date. By the time you get home at 1 am Elly will have calmed down.

Oh, you’re going to be the talk of everyone for a while, John. It’s the consequences of not knowing when to stop drinking. @psychlady – If that’s the way John handles things, then that was pretty immature and irresponsible. He gets what he deserves. If he’s so shy or adverse to crowds, then he should find one or two people he’s comfortable with, and hang out with them. Why drown himself in alcohol? That’s very 22 year old behavior, not the behavior of a grown man.@J. Short – LOL!!!

What Elly is really upset about is that no other guy kissed her!Just wonder if John kissed her at midnight?

Some people really like to hold on to their anger. I personally let it all go in one burst. My wife however can linger and linger and brood for days. Not much fun.

Kind of along the lines of “gaebie”, my first question would be where was Elly at midnight? If she wasn’t with John…who was she with?

Y’know, when I first read these strips (when they were first published) I thought they were just harmless fun. But on the re-read years later, I’m struck by just how self-centered Elly is. Everything’s about her, how events make HER feel, whether she gets what SHE wants. Synopsis of this story: John wanted a quiet, intimate New Years Eve with Elly and one or two close friends. She wanted a big party. She got what she wanted. John then got into the swing of the big party and (like most of the rest of the guests) made a fool of himself. She, of course, is now angry because he didn’t act the way she wanted him to. And now he’s apologizing (and his apology’s not being accepted) for not properly playing the role that puppet-master Elly had written for him..Ah, yes, FBoFW: Putting the “fun” in “dysfunction” for twenty-some years…

Well, guess they learned why you don’t drink or party. It always leads to misery.

I have read the strip from the beginning, and I too enjoyed the sense of humor, thinking the cartoonist admirable for poking fun at herself. I also had a lot of sympathy for Lynn Johnston when her marriage ended, but since reading the reruns since her retirement, I’m surprized the union lasted past the birth of the second child. In real life, John was either a super hero or a super wimp to have hung in there so long.

Elly shouldn’t be too awfully hard on John. After all, everyone knows that when you mix men and alcohol together, it can turn them into a real dumbass!!!!!

I don’t recall any kiss, I do recall him laying under the table somewhat drunk. He did warn you Elly, yet you did not pay heed, and when he did what he told you he would do, you take none of the blame.. Damned if we do, damned if we don’t

Elly as in ELEPHANT, as in “Elephants never forget.” She was named Elly for a reason! :-)

Why does it have to be Elly as the “bad guy”? He kissed someone who wasn’t his wife. Bad move. End of story.

This strip was written in a “different time” but it still makes the point that marriage is give and take. I don’t think Elly is the bad guy at all; sometimes her husband messes up too.

I’d hate to have anyone analysing my past life over the years. I’m thinking of doing a memoir on Dragon, but don’t want to be judged.
