It’s true that the best gift you can give to your children is your love for each other. An emotionally secure home environment is more important than anything else in a child’s heart. Lynn’s portrayal of a child crying because his parents are fighting is spot on.
We haven’t seen Ellie and John fight like this before… and neither have the kids. That’s why the kids are so upset. The parents are being very thoughtless in exposing the kids to adult issues. Although I can go along with Nabu’s comments, too, parents really don’t have any need to scare their kids like this.
My wife and I were like that when our kids were little, some bad fights. Once we found our 3 year old son behind his bed crying. Yes this is very ugly.
We changed our marriage some years later. I once remember our (by then) high school son coming into the living room, gave us a goofy look and asked why we are always touching and kissing all the time!
I grew up with my parents involved in some nasty shouting matches. My dad was a bit insensitive some times and my mom would pull his chain in return. My dad passed away just 6 days short of 95. Mom will celebrate her 93rd b-day tomorrow. They were together 73 years. Mom misses him so much. But it was so scary when they fought.
I remember one time when son was about two years old the wife and I started a fake argument, just shouting “You were right and I was wrong!” “NO I was wrong and you were right”He immediately broke into tears. It isn’t so much what is said as the way it is said.
I’ve heard that as long as things don’t devolve into screaming and insults, it’s actually good for kids to see their parents argue — and then RESOLVE an issue.
My husband and I had fights in front of the children, but our rule was, no yelling, no ugly words, and if they saw us fight, they had to see us resolve it too. We wanted them to know that , yes, marriage means disagreeing sometimes, but we can work it out.

Take heed, parents. This is truly how your kid hurts when you argue. And your attitude toward each other speaks volumes!

better an argument in front of the kids than drinking or drugs behind closed doors

Aww… this looks like one of those “Public Service Announcement” spots about fighting in front of your kids. :-(

In the nearly 45 years that my parents were married I NEVER heard them argue or raise their voices to each other. They are both now deceased.

That’s the trouble when parents bicker, the kids get caught right in the middle.
