They’ll end up teasing Timmy by saying they’ll give him a “Ben Franklin” for his birthday (but it’ll be a 50 cent coin). No wait…they’re made out of silver….forget it Timmy and be satisfied they let you see 2 Ben franklin cutouts..Happy Birthday to all!
Happy RaspberryIce’s birthday, everybody…. including Raspberry, of course.
Marg — I second your second comment. And “the goat’s in the garden”….AFAIK…. means …well…. it refers to….a…wardrobe malfunction….wherein …er….one of the curtains is caught in the back door…(often caused by not wearing anything underneath.)
Leaky….
MOOO!!
OK OK, I’m sorry…..LOL
But only if that’s what it takes to make you put your pants on and pass me some cake! Please?
@Raspberryice:Re: yesterday’s comment on bathrooms-That again was the case with my grandparents. It was ‘74 or ’75 the health department was enforcing everyone in that area to do away with their outhouses and get a septic tank. Actually, her new bathroom was kind of nice, but she threw a fit over it.
I remember when I was in about 5th grade, we went down to WV. The door to the outhouse was broken and where there used to be a door was just one vertical plank attatched by the hinges. My grandfather was slow to fix things and just hadn’t got to it yet. We were all careful not to walk to the front area of the outhouse if we knew someone was in there. My mother was upset (she hated going to their farm as it was). She was in the outhouse doing her thing and a cow came right up to the doorway and stared at her. The following year there was a new door.
Good mornin’, everyone, and Happy Birthday, Raspberry! I don’t remember ever seeing a sale for Ben’s Day, but it was a brand of ten-cent store in my neighborhood when my kids were young. I don’t think it sold pants, but all kinds of sundries that the kids liked. That was how they first learned to count change, as they had a small allowance.
As to official Holidays, that’s another beef I have. They can only have a certain number so they took away separate days for two outstanding Presidents of the Country so they could give some to two activists. I will still put out my garbage on those days and let it sit until the pick up (in my mild protest) because I always found both of them loud mouth activists in my time. One death in April did not keep me from a dinner celebration in downtown Chicago (as some were worried about riots, the Florentine room in Italian Village was nearly empty) We had a great time with everyone brave enough to go out (including the staff).
As always, Julie’s comic is TOO accurate in terms of representing the “Pennyesque” aspects of people in our socieity! A wonderful (albeit painful) comic! I wonder, however, wouldn’t it be more appropriate if ’ol Ben were saying “Buy! Buy! Buy!” instead of “Sell!, Sell!, Sell!”? Or am I misconstruing something?
Raspberry, here’s a question for you. Now that you are a Gentlewoman of position and some (unspecified) superannuation, do we have to treat you with respect? As you may have noticed, that is a commodity in short supply around here.
Good Day to all….TGIF if you are werking….. Happy B-Day Raz…… :-).The blue cloud…. now by BURL’s shirt tail…. is just gas…..BURL’s shirt says. …..ANY…… MORE CAKE………?………..
My Dad had an army buddy that lived on an ancient farm in WI, somewhat like the house that Ed Gein lived in. It had a cast iron stove, a pump at the sink, some sort of free standing heater in the living room, an old barn with cats and kittens, and an outhouse, which, according to my Dad, should have been knocked down and a new pit dug years ago. I learned useful things there, such as the Guinea hens are mean, and watch out for the cow pies!
Dazz, it really pains me to tell you how offensive I find your post — and also incorrect.
I didn’t say anything when you posted so callously elsewhere about dancing in the restaurant the night Martin Luther King was shot, but I have to speak now.
First of all, neither Lincoln’s nor Franklin’s …. nor some mysterious other president’s…. birthday has ever been a Federal holiday. Absolutely no holiday was “lost” to celebrate King’s…
Besides, Federal holidays only apply to Federal facilities.
Other holidays are set by the states.
Lincoln’s birthday probably disappeared for you when you moved to Arizona, which doesn’t observe it.
The list of FEDERAL holidays includes only two birthdays — MLK’s and George Washington’s…
The Founding Fathers were rabble-rousers, and without them we’d never have formed a new country.
Do you think they should have kept quiet too?
Or do you mean Cesar Chavez… whose birthday is NOT a Federal holiday, and is celebrated in only three states…. one of which is…you guessed it — ARIZONA!!
Chavez was a brave man, without whom grape workers would still be dying.
I never registered voters in the south, but I marched for civil rights in California…and I went to Delano, CA, in 1967.I saw the migrant camps, and the children out in the hot fields because there was no place to leave them. The pay was so low, way below minimum wage, with no chance of affording a motel or decent food, that only starving immigrants would do it.And they were LEGAL immigrants. Chavez fought strongly against illegal immigration, to protect them. In fact his position on that was far right of my own.But he’s still a hero to me, as is Martin Luther King, who, like most of us, had a few personal flaws, but was an inspiration nonetheless. Unless you think think schools should still be segregated, or 8 year-olds should work in textile mills, you have to think about what made those abuses stop.Slavery, Jim Crow laws, even rule by foreign powers, don’t simply disappear without some brave people speaking out.
Raspberry, that’s an urban myth. You can Google Presidents Day, or Lincolns birthday online and see the truth.
Nothing called President’s Day has ever been a Federal holiday; Lincolns birthday is still celebrated separately in many states, and it’s never been a federal decision.
@ Raspberry- thanks! I like that you remember the stores and that you remember when Lincoln and Washington had separate holidays. I realize that some states (like mine) have decided to celebrate different things. Both MLK and Chavez are Holidays here and I prefer to ignore both. I understand that Susan and Mikie have opinions which differ from mine and I am happy to see differences of opinions because that is important to make the world go around. I do not mean to purposely offend anyone but the marches and protests (including all the recent ones against our 1070) just annoy me. And Caeser Chavez was leading groups of fruit pickers (mixed legal and illegal) to protest and try to form unions. The only time I worked under a union was my very first drafting job after divorce in the ealy 70s and we were OBLIGED to stop working when break time was announced (even if we preferred to continue working) so that made me anti-union!
I hope I have not alienated any friends, but I must be true to my own beliefs and upbringing. My experiences in the Chicago area growing up in the 40s and 50s (married in 1959) gives me a different outlook than many of you, and moving to AZ (just so I can enjoy a beautiful garden and year-round flowers does not mean that I always agree with local politics (especially as it was said recently that we are “in play” :-(
@ Leaky and Dry- no I have no plans to bring out any weaponry and I hope that Susan agrees. I do love to vent however and had my significant postions on religion posted recently on Luann in 2 comments. I have not worn a garter belt since the 50s (but fail to understand how women wear commercial shoes without hose. My homemade leather shoes are very comfortable on bare feet all day long, however and I plan to make some in a modern style as mine are medieval turned shoes.
vldazzle I rarely wear dresses, or hose, in winter I wear knee socks under my slacks. I try not to discuss religion unless a comment ticks me off BIG TIME. AND I AM SURE GLAD YOU AREN’T DRAGGING OUT ANY WEAPONRY! YOU WOULD BE A FORMIDABLE OPPONENT! :-D
@Dry, I never bring out weapons unless really threatened, but I have always been a pretty good shot, and I generally avoid contraversial topics. I guess our local politics have me a little upset. Obama hinted that the recent photo with our governor was just publicity hunting by her, but HE was the one to criticise her book based on the bits that his staffers “fed” him (he only read their excerpts).
And dry, I often wear slacks as well and I love silk long johns under them (and wear just those in winter to work out with my weights, as I keep thermostat no higher than 72 in winter days and lower to sleep. Even with pants I find commercial shoes intolerable on bare feet, so I wear pantihose if I will wear any shoes other than those I made (with dresses or slacks). A friend helped measure for my base pattern so mine are totally custom ;-)

As to the strip (I know GymShoe… about time! Sorry.)
I haven’t seen a Ben Franklin’s birthday sale in years.
That little bell never goes off in Joy’s head, does it?
If she could hear herself and didn’t know it was her own voice, how stupid would she say “that woman” was?
For Timmy’s sake, I hope it’s the Liberty Bell…. and he escapes before he absorbs too much Crustwood culture.
Poor Timmy. His expression says it all.
He’ll never see a $20 bill till he earns one at his first job after high school.
That reminds me of a Crustwood-High-School-diploma type moment: I said to a friend a few years ago that there ought to be a holiday for Franklin…..
She said he didn’t need one, cos…“we already have President’s Day.”
Anyway, this one looks like a re-worked older strip, cos Burl’s shirt has been half obliterated.
What did it say, previously? It’s like playing Wheel of Fortune.
