Easier to avoid conflict and be in denial than to deal with the problem. ;-) I always watch my animals to see if they are alert or nervous. If they are fine and relaxed, then I am too.
white noise, that is my solution, I keep a fan going all year long to cover all the little creaks and pops of an old house just doing its thing.

Blame the noise on the cat then realize said cat is laying across your ankles.
Our refrigerator makes popping sounds at night. It can drive one crazy and sometimes, I nearly jump out of my skin.
Maybe Elly should be letting Farley sleep with her whenever John’s away. That would make it less scary being home alone at night.
Dying in bed is the comfortable way to go, I must say.
