What I could not understand was the workers at the Nursing Home where my husband died from lung disease taking their breaks outside to puff away. I asked one âWhy?â She answered âwe all die from something.â Stupid!
I started smoking as a kid because my boring old parents DIDNâT. I managed to stop 23 years ago, BTW. I have an oldest kid who smokes, a middle kid who hates it, and a youngest who used to sneak âem in her early teens, but hasnât picked one up since then.
I once asked the oldest â the only one who actually grew up with smoking parents â why she, or any children of smokers, smoke. After all, shouldnât you rebel against something?
Her answer was enlightening. âWell, Mom â even SMOKERS donât want their KIDS to smoke!â
My hubby died at 79, a long life by all accounts. He loved to hike, bird watch, travel in the RV. But the last 5 years all that was impossible, and he sat around unhappy that he had caused his last years to be something less than he had hoped. You start with O2 at night, then during naps, then 24 hours a day. But as a teenager, he was really cool. He did live 20 years after he quit smoking. There is more to dread than cancer.
Smoking doesnât always âtake the wind out of youâ . When I was on Active Duty, I smoked and still ran 3 miles every day. I never did make it up to smoking a pack a day tho. Iâve quit for the last 2 years.
I know some peers who have sat through those âhealthâ classes and have gotten amazing scores on those âsay no! to drugsâ tests, and then I see them after school or at parties smoking.
My sister quit smoking not long ago, but not just for her health. She said the main reason because it was just too expensive. Sheâs still addicted to Pepsi but that wonât kill you as fast as cigarettes will.
