Janis: Are those my old sunglasses? Arlo: I'm making a point! Arlo: Technical folderol is no substitute for a strong script and great acting! Arlo: "My Dinner With Andre" being a perfect example. Janis: As I recall, you fell asleep at that movie! Arlo: Well, who could fall asleep at a movie today?!

@pschearer (answering last night’s question): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082783/quotes?qt=qt0313437
It’s the effect of first seeing the movie when I was too young, I think; what I took away from it was the notion of killing myself by going to bed.

I concur with Arlo about the dearth of quality screenwriting and acting.

A bit more entertaining is the parody “My Breakfast with Blassie,” starring Freddie Blassie and Andy Kaufman.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was very well done and true to the book

Apropos the day: A few of us at work were discussing “Groundhog Day” when it was first released. One woman (an M.B.A, so she wasn’t just some dummy) said she found it boring because it was so repititious!!
When she realized from our reactions that she had said something rather silly, she tried to back off by saying she has trouble staying awake for most movies.

There are still good movies being made, just as there have always been bad movies (for comparison’s sake, “My Dinner with Andre” was released the same year as “Take This Job and Shove It”; wanna bet which one made more money?). But if you’re not a regular movie-goer, the only movies you’re likely to be aware of are the ones with “mass appeal”, meaning the ones that appeal to most of the people who actually go to the movies, meaning teenagers and young singles.

For further comparison, the most popular movie released in 1981 (by a long chalk) was “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” That was loud and fast and would have been a natural for 3-D. Whether or not “My Dinner with Andre” would be considered a “better movie” depends almost entirely upon taste…

One year after this came out, I fell asleep watching Thor:the Dark World
