Rat: Listen, Steph, I know that every year you're up for cartooning's highest award, the Reuben, and that every year you lose. So now I feel bad for building you this empty trophy shelf. Pastis: Is that so? Rat: Yeah. So I bought you some decorative wooden letters to fill the space. They're fun to rearrange if you're ever bored. Pastis: Well, I guess that's pretty nice of you. Thanks. Rat: Oh, look, I've rearranged them. Pastis: Take them down. Pig: That does not look like a trophy.

Mmmm, … that shelf seems to only have one bracket. How does it stay up? Must be a magical shelf. Maybe instead of a collection of trophies and awards, Stephan can use it for a collection of “Homies” figurines.

Maybe things will improve for Pastis when he tries his hand with Cul-de-Sac. Just keep the rat out of it – or you’ll never see the kids again.

Real-life Pastis has never yet won the NCS Reuben Award, although he has won the NCS Newspaper Strip Division Award three times, in 2003, 2004, and 2006. Cartoon-Pastis, however, may just be a LOSER….
