i am at the point now with the banings that i use no “strong” languige, and if i knew how to post a link i would not do so. i had ben thinking about adding emoticons and “photobucket” to my list of things to learn, but not now. at least on this site. i had a thought. maybe someone tech savvy could answer me. is it possible to set up a site so it automatically kicks you out if you set up to a link that is designated forbidden by the programmers. do we know that a person did it, or is it being done automatically? i have no idea if that is even possible, just a thought.
Enlarged available from here. Painting discussed here and here (sold for more than £1 million according to Wikipedia page on the artist). So far, only work by this artist to appear in Mr. Melcher’s blog.
I did send an email on mabrndt’d behalf and received an answer saying the matter had been resolved. They didn’t, however, explain what the resolution was.
@person of interest, I have received no answer, and I like dogsniffs idea that the site could save us all this consternation by making the rules more clear, or in the case of persons “Banned” why specifically that happened ;-P
I emailed Tuesday and got a form letter promising a response in 48 hours and have heard nothing since. Should those of us who have emailed once do so again? what subject line hets the most attention?

mabrndt comments on today’s picture, not as clever with the links, if interested will have to copy and paste the webpages into your browser.Mike
OK confession time. Yes I’m a newcomer and maybe I jumped the gun. I confess I clicked the “Flag” on your post in multiple strips that day because it looked like spam when you were posting that link to the PBS program. I did not think a regular poster here would post the same link 15+ times in 15+ comic strip discussion threads, so I did it to try to be a good newbie and alert the site it was getting a link spam.
Well, it seems to me the best way to protest would be never to sign up for Pro membership and if you already are, drop it and tell them why. Money talks.
Ok…. whew…. I hardly know where to start…. first, thank you, SwimsWithSharks, for letting us know your possible part in it. That was brave! I admire people who admit to being culpable — that’s a quality in short supply.
But don’t beat yourself up — if a link was on so many forums, I’m sure others flagged it too.
While Mabrndt’s post wasn’t really spam, people are quick to flag repeat links.
And thanks Mike 31.
That’s what GoComics calls “banning”, at least the first step of it. You can see your own posts in the forums so you don’t realise for ages that no one else can see them. Very sneaky!
Perhaps you didn’t see the direct link I already posted to Mabrndrt’s profile up above? It’s easier than copying and pasting. You can bookmark someone’s profile page once you get there.
It’s still there, just scroll back… sigh…. OK, or just CLICK HERE (I always suggest a right click and “open in a new window.”)
On his profile Mabrndt says most of what I was about to say…..
I got the same e-mail saying the issue is “resolved”…. but further down the page, it says that the moderator doesn’t share their “support tickets.”
That means all tech support can do is call it resolved, and pass on the message to the moderators (which is a different department.)
In other words, the actual banning is not a technical issue.
All technical issues are therefore resolved — but the ban is still in place till the moderator decides what to do.
The other thing is about links….I’ll post that separately cos this is too long already.
First of all, to Hallford, Dazz, and anybody else with concerns about what is permissible….
If by emoticons you mean things like :) and even alt codes like ♥ and ♪, those are just text to a browser.
AFAIK unless someone comes up with some obscene ones, they’re ignored by moderators and even sites with nannybots.
>br>In my experience, links that are NOT spam and NOT inappropriate are permissible here, as is posting appropriate pictures.
So is some other HTML mark-up, e.g. italics, bold and underline.
If any of that were cause for banning, it wouldn’t be allowed in the first place. There are plenty of sites where links or pictures simply won’t post.
If any code works here by accident, you can bet they will find and disable it.
No, the problem is content — you can post words, symbols, links and pictures but not any of that for commercial gain, or that’s not “family friendly.”
As for copyright….
While it looks like you’re posting an actual image in a comment with the IMG tag, it’s actually a link to its location on another site.
The picture hosting site has to worry about copyright…. you didn’t post it.
It’s still not right to link to sites, or images thereon, if they request no linking or don’t want the extra traffic, in which case they may stop you, or to upload a copyrighted picture to another site, such as Photobucket, without permission, and then link to THAT.
If a work is in the public domain, it is so everywhere — but another site has no duty to allow you to direct too much traffic there.
Mostly, though, if you keep your nose clean with regard to inappropriate content, you have no need to refrain from enjoying yourself with what you can do and learn on these forums.

maybe we should start a movement to get mabrndt released from prison, contact the gocomics people and threaten to boycott the site or something

Oh — I also didn’t know, as I haven’t read the comments on this strip for a few days….didn’t see it posted anywhere else, either.
I’ve only seen a limited number of his posts, but they were helpful, and I can’t even imagine that he purposely linked to or said anything offensive.
Don’t give up too soon, Dogsniff, unless you’re being hassled or flagged for it.
OK, I Googled him, and found HIS PROFILE.
If you click on that you can read or bookmark his comments for now.
I’ll write to GoComics, too. It’s so silly!
