I take it, from the comments, that recent events factor into understanding today’s strip. But now, equipped with that, I still don’t get it. Both are invited, so that means “the third” is there. Perhaps it is something to do with there being no sitter for Annie? What am I missing?
@codedaddy: the two friends Lila referred to are Boyd and the supervisor (can’t remember her name); Lila is the third. Since Lila won’t go with them (or anywhere with the ex-friend), Boyd automatically has plans. :)

You can say “No, I have plans” even if those plans are just to hang out at home with your child. And you don’t have to tell ’em that.
