Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for February 22, 2012
Transcript:
Alex: Gram! Joanie: Everything okay, dear? Alex: Yes! He says he wants to discuss it in person, and that he wants to ask me, not the other way around. Joanie: Great. Can I get back in the car now? Alex: In a sec, Gram. I have to say goodbye. No, I love you more... wrong. I love you more... no, dude...

When Gram gets back in the car, she is going to smack some sense into Alex.

Joanie now understands why some animals eat their young.

Boy! Toggle is SUCH a control freak!
Agent54 about 13 years ago
How about asking for him to call the State Hyway Patrol for help. Duhā¦ Or maybe she could if her head was screwed on tight.

Anybody who goes out into a blizzard when thereās a risk of being stranded is an idiot.
nagut about 13 years ago
So WHY doesnāt Alex go outside if she wants some privacy?

Whereās Joanieās cell phone?
asa4ever about 13 years ago
New Haven to Framingham, 12 hours in April. Smart enough at least to take I-95 to I-495. Went over Mass Pike and cars were stranded every where. Heard they had to take people to HJ on snowmobiles.
asa4ever about 13 years ago
Diabetic wife and 5 month old baby. Not so smart after all.

Obviously this strip takes place somewhere in a normal New England winter, not the one we actually haveā¦
wordymom about 13 years ago
Itās a good thing itās going to be 58 degrees here in MA today, or Iād really be worried about Joanie.

Grandma needs to get warm, and THEN warm up a certain part of Alex!

Having lived in the northern states for many years, Iām enjoying this story line. The comments, though, are a different matter. I encountered the words āidiotā and āstupidityā, and I wonder why we have to be so judgemental.
babka Premium Member about 13 years ago
Iām so happy!!!!!! love them both, and they love eachother. :0)
Potrzebie about 13 years ago
If they polled all the mooks stranded in blizzards I wonder what would be their excuse for going out?
Packratjohn Premium Member about 13 years ago
Well, thereās a huge difference between doing something that is considered stupid, and actually being stupid. One does not preclude the other, neither does it assure it.
babka Premium Member about 13 years ago
big difference between being stupid and being naive.

What about respecting your elders? Elder abuse!
Alex is one selfish girl in my book. You go sit in a snow bank, young lady!
dook about 13 years ago
What has apparently become lost in all of this is that āGramā is supposed to help Elizabeth Warrenās election campaign. āFor want of a nail, the shoe was lost ā¦ā With clueless juniors like Alex around, itās probably just as well that the younger generation doesnāt vote (at least thatās becoming the case in Canada).
babka Premium Member about 13 years ago
where would we be without negative projection?
marzipANn about 13 years ago
Gram should speak up and tell Alex to call for help while her cell phone still works.
krisjackson01 about 13 years ago
Larry, that was the ā97 storm, right?

Whew! That ānoā yesterday had me worried about Leo.

āAnybody who goes out into a blizzard when thereās a risk of being stranded is an idiot.ā
I guess that would be me, when I went out twice into some of the worst blizzard conditions Iāve ever seen, having grown up in PA, MA & NJ, lived in CO for many years, during the blizzard of ā82 to go with a friend whoās daughter was seriously ill to get her medications. Walking home the last time, after abandoning our vehicle because the road was totally blocked by other abandoned vehicles, I couldnāt tell my house from the others except by counting them as I went down the street, where the snow was a little less deep, only up to my thighs. Iām 6ā2".
Since I was wearing my winter climbing gear, the same stuff I wore when I went climbing fourteeners in winter here, I wasnāt concerned. People who are terrified of snow just donāt know how to deal with it, like dressing appropriately. Itās the same with racing motorcycles in the dessert or spelunking. If you like that sort of thing, dangerous things, then itās wise to be properly prepared. If youāre afraid of them, avoid them. But I have some great memories of pushing the limits with some great guys, and I have the scars to prove it, and Iām still here bouncing my grandchildren on my knee.

I hate the ālove you moreā schtick. Itās bull hockey. Either you love or you donāt; if you have to measure your love, it aināt love.
fritzoid Premium Member about 13 years ago
When my ex-girlfriend and I got stuck in the āI love you moreā loop, Iād end it by saying āI guess Iām just more loveable.ā
(And no, thatās not WHY sheās my ex-girlfriend.)
summerdog86 about 13 years ago
It is possible that Alexās phone battery will die while sheās trading ālove yousā and that means no rescue for her and Gram for a while. It would make for a longer storyline.
Gokie5 about 13 years ago
Could anyone spare a minute to send an āinserting picutres into comments for dummiesā? Enjoy reading your allās comments!
basshwy about 13 years ago
Can anybody see that the phone will run out of power before the patrol gets called?
Michael McKown Premium Member about 13 years ago
I will be SO SAD with Garry retires. That will be a black day indeed. Heās given me more belly laughs than everyone else combined.
FriscoLou about 13 years ago
Whew, that darn Trudeau really had us going. Good thing Leo didnāt say, āI would Alex, but your mom is too darn cccrazyā. Assuming the face to face goes well, I nominate babka for flower girl.
Can you imagine the bachelorette party the motherās-in-law can put together? Itāll be more creative if JJās in charge. Iām sure GTāll do em justice.
Hmmm, never seen a Doonesbury character post a comment before.
Gokie5 about 13 years ago
Thanks, John. I went to the link you gave and wound up with
(only it wouldnāt let me copy that from the link, so I had to write it down and type it)
Donāt know what to do with it ā I told you I needed something for dummies! Will see what the gocomics techās come up with. Appreciate your trying! ā„
Gokie5 about 13 years ago
Wouldnāt even enter it when I typed it. Sheesh.
galanti about 13 years ago
It wouldnāt be a tragedy if this series results in a āblizzard tragedy.ā

Iām happy for Alex and Toggle. Gram likely would be too, if she were IN the car.
