Thank you for giving me an image I can use in my powerpoint lecture on stereotype threat.
BTW – the " European Americans in athletic situations " refers to white male golfers putting. Just being told that the experiment was on “how white males have deficits putting” was enough to cause golfers to putt more poorly than normal.
A skeptic might observe that “Stereotype Threat” could be an excuse for a poor performance.
So, if I get in a lasagna eating contest with Garfield, and he out eats me, I can claim my losing performance was the result of stereotype threat because everyone knows white men in their late 50s can’t eat as much pasta as cartoon cats?
So she completes an endlessly complex mathematical calculation, but makes one little mistake about half way through! Simple, fulfills both stereotypes! (But she secretly keeps the right answer in her personal diary, just to show…)
Blog—NIHL…: I can live with the NIHL, but the tinnitus is killing me. When a mechanical switch breaks, it’s either off, on, or intermittent. If the GABA (gamma amino butric acid, I think) receptors in the brain are stuck on, you can get tinnitus. In my case, an extremely loud 10khz tone 24/7.
I’m so pleased that you posted examples of Louisa Matthíasdóttir’s paintings. She is, IMHO, a perfect example of “painting with a beginner’s eye.” Thank you.
The background for today’s strip was not as interesting as the backgound for yesterday;s strip. But the subtle shading variants within the sunglass frames are spectacular!
“Stone” is an amazing picture. I have found it blogged and reblogged, pinned and re-pinned, and it either leads back to blessedwildapplegirl or .la douleur exquise., both intriguing blogs in their own right… but nary a source or explanation. I’m stumped.
I am a white woman who is terrible at math and good at writing English My sister is a white woman who excels at math and is a terrible writer. I did her English homework, and she did my math. Stereotype rendered meaningless.

I found the discussion on sterotype threats both informative and depressing. It is sad how people can be programmed by other people’s labels.
I also was fascinated by the distinctions between addiction, abuse and dependency. Very informative! See, reading FA and FB is educational!!
Besides, where else would I meet such a cool bunch of commenters?

And those swinging balls just won’t stop! What a clatter! :-)
