Arlo: These are interesting!
Janis: That's a bulb catalog!
Janis: "Amaryllis Belladonna."
Janis: "Commonly known as 'Pink Naked Ladies'!"
Arlo: I swear I just thought they were pretty flowers!
My favorite flower, Have them in many spots around the yard. They have tall slender leaves at the present time which will die down and in a couple months, the stalk and flower will appear. quite lovely and unusual.
It is too early to plant here in western North Dakota but some people have done it already. It could still snow so I always wait until May. Our growing season is so short (late April to September).
Belladonna does mean beautiful lady in Italian. It makes the pupils dilate, which the Italians apparently thought was quite lovely. However, it is deadly. Doctors used it as drops for eye exams, and in liquid form for ulcers – until something safer was found.
FWIW, my belladonna lilies have very lush leaves this spring. I am anxious to see if that translates into a better-than-average display of the flowers later this year. They are a popular flower here in SW Missouri.

I still think that these story lines about wine tasting and flower planting may well presage a garden wedding chez A&J Day.

BELLADONNA, n. In Italian a beautiful lady; in English a deadly poison. A striking example of the essential identity of the two tongues.
