It seems kinda silly to use salt herring for the job; wouldn’t hot sauce work just as well?

One of my bald-by-20 grandfather’s stories about how he got there was that once when he was a boy he had lice in his hair, so his mother put castor oil in it. The lice then pulled out all his hair to wipe with.
My dad used to say that they would dip a comb in coal oil (kerosene) and comb the hair. (Just had to keep way from open flames for awhile)
Hair today….gone tomorrow.
