Boy: Did you know Isaac Newton once stuck a bodkin behind his eyeball just to see what was back there. Girl: Eww. Boy: I'm just saying that puts the peanut-up-my-nose scandal into perspective. Girl: Eww.
Fairportfan2 has it right. The original bodkin was commonly used in assassinations. The term “Odds Bodkin” derives from that since the left, or odd, hand was commonly used. The reason being it was less watched and thus a little more likely to be unnoticed.
Sounds like the time I operated on myself in an attempt to remove a piece of graphite that’s been in my arm since age 5 when my brother stabbed me with a pencil. I used my biology lab dissecting kit. FAILED. That piece is still in my arm after 60 years………… My roommates came in from bball practice, took one look and left the room!
I’d never heard this one before http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/exhibitions/Footprints_of_the_Lion/private_scholar.html , but by all that’s holy, it shows that genius is different from common sense.

Also a narrow tool used to adjust hand-set type. I may be old, but I can still set type from a California case.
