Dill has a point there…

A friend of mine had a recording of a vacuum cleaner, blender, pencil sharpener and box fan quartet

Petey’s oboe-sounds in panel 1 seem smoother: I think he’s beginning to master his piece! So, Alice’s introduction of vacuum cleaner accompaniment was rather rude. I’m glad Madeline defused that situation (even if Alice is momentarily resentful; Dill will help her forget).

i’ve been a working musician for over 45 years, and in my considered opinion most vacuum cleaners are way more musical than most of the oboists i’ve known…

Petey should be happy that Alice has never heard “Anvil Chorus”.

I can’t wait till Alice gets a little older and takes up the tuba.

Right now Alice could fit IN a tuba…

I’m sure PDQ Bach wrote something for vacuum cleaner and oboe!

Well, it’s established now that Pete is playing inside, because Alice was told to go OUTSIDE. But we still don’t know what that strange surface he is standing on.

Nice try.

I think his dealer must be better than ours….lol…just kidding…

As I write this, I’m listening to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NS2-_1kWq-U It is a recording of The University Orchestra at the University of Texas at Austin, playing Malcolm Arnold’s “A Grand Grand Overture” — which is mocking traditional Overture form. It was written for the 1956 Hoffnung Music Festival, and has the unusual designation of solo “instruments”: 3 Vacuum Cleaners, 1 Floor Polisher and 4 Rifles. It’s actually quite enjoyable music!
