Monty by Jim Meddick for May 01, 2012
Transcript:
Um, Monty... When you were describing that movie, you used the g-word... The g-word? We don't believe in g-word toys. All our toys are educational or inspirational... Yeah. Like doctor kits... Toy cookware... Just try not to mention the g-word again... Oh. Ok. Sorry. So Perny, what're you up to there? I'm performing brain surgery on Teddy with a and blender.

Did someone say âgunsâ? Iâve got everything from flintlocks to semi-autos.

Perny needs a gun as it would be quicker than the hand blender.

âHand blenderâ? In my youthful days, when Mom, or I working in the kitchen with her, actually used such a thing regularly, it was never called anything other than âegg-beater,â regardless of what it was being used to mix/blend/froth, etc.Kids will be kids, despite helicopter parents, and can readily enough (if not always articulately) distinguish between play and make-believe on the one hand and reality or âfor real" on the other. Toy guns and âcops and robbersâ or âsoldiersâ or âcowboys and indiansâ as play-tropes (particularly but not exclusively for little boys) are not harmful, if the child is sane to begin withâŠ.

I sometimes marvel that todays generation that are attempting to ban toy guns are the same people that used to have so much fun as kids playing cops and robbers/cowboys and indians or âWarâ.

My lovely former spouse had a thing about toy guns and decided that they were taboo when our son was born. Funny how when he got to the age to start playing that way, a stick was a more than suitable substitute for his games. Seems like we ban things rather than take responsibility for educating and socializing our kids and accepting responsibility for being parentsâŠ

This happened to me. I was at my cousinâs house, and in the middle of telling a story, was informed that we werenât allowed to mention guns because that was the policy at my cousinâs daugtherâs school. Due to fear of violence, theyâd omitted any mention of firearms, and asked that parents continued the policy in the home. I couldnât believe that my cousin and her husband conceded to such silliness, but, it was their home, so I followed their rules. Several years later, cuz and her family moved back to Montana, and now go on annual hunting trips at Thanksgiving. The daughter whose school didnât allow mention of guns killed her first deer at 12 or 13.

Wow, these parents should chill a bitâŠquick story; one time at band campâŠno, not that oneâŠwhen kids were little, went to petting zoo, 2 bunnies started looking for love so to speak, we distracted the kids and moved them on, snickeringâŠmy Aunt (former hippie like) who was with us asked us later why we let them play shoot-em up vid games and watch violent movies, but keep them from seeing and learning about one of lifeâs natural and ânot so badâ momentsâŠgood wake up call, Auntie!

From what Iâve read, no âg-wordâ households tend to have boys in them that find creative ways to imagine a gun for their play. A sheet of paper folded into a triangular âfootballâ makes an excellent handgrip for a gun whose barrel is a standard ball point pen.
ramonesfan almost 13 years ago
The Ramones never used the âF-wordâ in any of their songs, that I know of âŠ. is it OK for the kids to listen?
Popeyesforearm almost 13 years ago
Yeah, that kidâs gonna be in a clock tower with a 7mm.

I know a lot of parents who didnât like their kids playing with guns. I was like that, but let our boys play with space guns.

Itâs almond liqueur. To my mind the best brand is di Saronno, which comes from Italy. Dang, now I want some. lol
