FRAZZ BY JEF MALLETT Mrs. Olsen: What is it you see in Frazz? Miss Plainwell: See your yourself: Ask him if he can ride a unicycle. Mrs. Olsen: Oookay. You like him because he can ride a tricky toy. Miss Plainwell: No, no. Think. Concentrate on his tone. Mrs. Olsen: You like how he's astonished anybody else in the world can't. Miss Plainwell: But especially that he offered to teach you.

‘ride my unicycle’ is street slang for something that i can’t elaborate on.

If you ever get a chance to meet Jef in person you will find that this is his life philosophy. “Love everything you do and share everything you love.” Running, riding, drawing, swimming, … whatever it is he is eager to share his passion for it. And whatever you share with him he is genuinely interested to hear about why you like it.

A recent XKCD (my other favorite) has a similar slant to it. NOT as warm and fuzzy, but a bit motivational http://xkcd.com/1053/ worth checking out.

I think what he has is something the Chinese culture used to put a big emphasis on: modesty.
Like George Washington. No me-me-me, braggety-brag…just do the stuff, and bring others along. Pretty much the opposite of CELEBRITY culture. And for sure the opposite of Wall Street culture and ideals. Real people like Frazz will SAVE our culture and maybe our country. My guess is it has a lot to do with what you spend your time on: mastery of the material, or dazzling and getting attention. Big Jeff may have a lot of modesty in him, because his character does, and because of the nature of cartooning as I believe I’ve observed it: lots of attention on the work…the essence of real martial arts…focus on the job at hand.
Bicycling is another thing that a person can continually get better at, and requires that you BE THERE, focused, on the job, to make it work. Homework, an artefact from the 19th century, is another place where a person can learn to be a superior human being. Focus on the job at hand.
I won’t throw in much of a comparison or contrast using names like Hilton or current members of Congress here. For faults in our selves, we select the wrong class of people as leaders, all along the social world. As American people begin to struggle in a world of less-available resources, we’ll see whether we choose the preeners, self-aggrandizers, movie stars, and the players-to-the audience, or choose metaphorical lifeguards and truly capable people with our interests in mind.

Oh…I almost missed her tricky put-down of Frazz’ girlfriend…“You like him because he can ride a tricky toy(YOU!)…and she just kept going on her task, which was to explain…why she liked him. Frazz is…”gladly would he learn…and gladly teach…"

I like how the double-tall cell fits back twice into the storyline…

Unicycling is tough and takes a LOT of practice.

The mind reels, trying to visualize Mrs. Olsen on a unicycle.
