When I was 6 or 7, we went on vacation and my parents put our dalmation puppy, “Spotty” into a kennel. When we returned, there seemed to be a delay in getting Spotty home. Finally my father told me that Spotty, who was always afraid of stairs, was pulled down a staircase and broke a leg(s) – in those days (mid-1940s) I guess they didn’t believe in putting dogs in splints and Spotty was put to sleep. I took this very bitterly and when we got another dog, I never wanted her to be taken care of in a kennel.
That’s so sad- kennels are so much nicer these days, and dog-sitters can make them comfortable. But at the time, this was the best option most of us had- we had some good experiences.
We took our cat to the vet when we went on a 2 week vacation. When we got back and went to pick her up, there wasn’t much left of her. The vet said she’d refused to eat and didn’t charge us anything. It broke her health and she was never the same. Instead of her pretty little mew, her voice was a croak after that. It made me wonder if she’d worn her voice out crying. Though she gained weight again, the change in her voice was permanent. After that we always paid someone to come feed her at the house when we were going to be away for a few days.
I met a pet-sitter yesterday. While she takes care of both cats and dogs, she prefers cats because she dislikes having to walk the dogs in 100+ degree heat.
Are you KIDDING me or what?!?!?!? That’s a pretty horrible thing to say about the death of someone’s beloved pet . . . especially when they were 6 or 7 years of age at the time! Go crawl back under your rock, bridge or wherever it is you came from, you bitter, nasty little TROLL!!!!! Ugliness like that isn’t appreciated or welcome here!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to all who defended my feelings against Loy Wells’ insensitivity. Spottie’s loss was the first – but unfortunately not the last – contact with death I had. I don’t think I even cried in front of my family – I just ran out to the street and cried.
Hush, people! I have a cat boarded at the vet tonight. but this vet is actually pretty amazing, also runs a rescue facility for wild animals. She rehabed about 20 bears last year injured in wildfires. Had an injured bobcat today that we saw. Our old man will be fine but angry, I am sure.

We’ve done pet-sitting for people from time to time. It seems to make the animal happier they;re in a familiar place.
Too bad they didn’t drive, Farley would have a lot of fun on a farm.
