Good morning, Vagabonds. Now I’m at my friend’s home in Amsterdam. We’ve been communicating by email for over 13 years and finally we’ve met in person. In a few hours I’ll be taking the plane back to JFK.
I can’t remember just the way we went to Montana. I know we went through Pendelton, Ore. and Lewiston, Idaho, and then took the Lewis and Clark Trail road. It is a great ride. 60 miles of slow climbing with no buildings of any kind. Maybe acouple of signs, an occasional pull-out. Then drop down the east end through a dark forest and see the first buildings. When the road levels out you come out south of Missoula. That was forty years ago, and I hope they never changed it.>>>>>>From there it was north to the Polson, Ronan(?) area, south of Flathead Lake. There were friends of friends of mine that lived near Polson. I wound up staying with a Flathead Indian family, big family. All they knew about me was that I was from San Francisco. A city boy, they assumed I guess.>>>>>>They had a bunch of horses in a field near the house, and I asked if I could ride one. One guy tossed a rope to me, with a big smile and told me to go pick one out. So I built a loop and went out into the field Picked ouit a horse, then slowly worked them into a corner of the field, but left plenty of room to get out. When the first one got by me, the rest followed and all I had to do was toss that loop out and the horse settled down as soon as it felt the rope around it’s neck. Made a simple hackmore(?), jumped on it’s back and rode back to the house.>>>>>>Someone asked where I’d learned to do that. Told them I hadn’t lived in San Francisco all my life. I threw a saddle on it, and went for a ride. The horse had responded well to my simple hackmore(?), so I didn’t botther with a bridle.I don’t know where Ray stayed.I got to see a Pow Wow in the short time we were there. Fascinating. I was drawn to the dancers, wishing I could join them. But they were all dressed as indians, and had bells around their ankles. The rhythm was mesmerizing.>>>>>>After a week or so, Ray and I left and, I don’t know if we even had a destination. Then we heard that they needed fire fighters in Deer Lodge to fighjt a fire near town. It was after midnight when we got there to the sheriff’s office, Weslept on the lawn there until daylight and were fed, along with a dozen or so teenages, then got into a truck and headed for the fire, It was pretty high on the mountain, and there were no trails up, other than those made by animals.. When we got to a clearing, we found that smoke-jumpers had been the and slowed the fire. They were gone, and tools, food, bedding, even a kitchen set-up.. That I still wonder how theyn did kitchen thing because every thing up there had been, and continued to be, parachuted in. Water and fuel, too. >>>>>>Like I said, so much happened that year. When I come back, I will tell about the fire. Nomad logging off.
Buenos DĂas: Today I plan to walk 2 blocks up the street where a neighbor has a little mango “fruit stand” by their front door. They have everything labeled as to ripeness ("ready-to- eatness) and different prices for the different sizes, etc. I prefer local produce, and you can’t get more “local” than 2 blocks up the street. The mango house is on the far corner of the next block east. The house on the near corner of that same block was used as a setting by “The Glades” tv series (A&E) a couple years back – it was great fun hanging out with the extras and stand-ins and watching the film crew at work. Last year I saw them at work about 5 blocks away and watched for a while and talked to a lady stand-in who had also recently worked on a “Bones” show that was filming in Miami (she was the stand-in for Emily Deschanel). I hope the film crew comes back into the neighborhood this year – ROLLING…BACKGROUND…ACTION!
BENITIN Y ENEAS: Mutt says: I run behind the street car to my house (mi casa) and save a coin (a nickel). So Jeff says, I’ll run behind a taxi to my house and save $ 1.50! I guess there’s some logic in that – lol. Over at the Mutt & Jeff English version, a commenter posts that some lawyer’s make big bucks by running behind ambulances. ha ha ha
Unable to sleep. Spent more than three hours laying there, checking the time. I’m out of a couple of my meds, and feeling the effects. Should get the meds this evening whenmy cleaning girl comes. Feel like …….. Oh, well.
Arye…….you have had one great trip! I actually like short trips………you can see more and do more because you have a deadline.
Slim……..loved your story today. About the Pow Wow…..that rhythm is certainly fantastic, isn’t it! We try to go to one if we know about it. About the drive from Lewiston, Idaho to Missoula……it still is quite pretty!!! Very few houses or ranches the entire strip. Some of the prettiest scenery in the country. What we got a kick about was, at the top of Lolo Pass there is a rest area with a little ranger station, and it is designated as a National Rest Area!!!!! Woo Hoo!
Florchi……it is appreciated to have the translation of Mutt & Jeff. I know I can switch over, but sometimes our computer is extremely slow, and I don’t do it. Thanks :)))
We had Chicken Florentine last night, using tons of our very own spinach. I too, love fresh veggies and fruit.!!!
